Open Arms, defence rejoinder: ‘pm errors lose sight of the bigger picture’

Palermo, 20 Dec (LaPresse) – ‘Listening to the prosecutor, I am reminded of the lighting of the tesserae in the mosaics of the cathedral of Monreale. A splendid illumination that enhances the individual tesserae. Beware, however, that if you illuminate the single tessera you lose the overall picture'. This was said by Matteo Salvini's defence lawyer Giulia Bongiorno in her counter reply to the words of the prosecutor in the Open Arms trial that is being held in the bunker room of Palermo's Pagliarelli prison and in which former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini is accused of kidnapping and refusal to perform acts of office for having denied for days the disembarkation of 147 migrants on board the NGO ship Open Arms in August 2019. The defence added: ‘There are errors by the prosecutor on the manner of disembarkation of minors and the European redistribution of migrants. In this case the procedure is perfected until there is agreement on the quotas for each individual state.’
