Milan, 17 Dec (LaPresse) – ‘I want to recognise that Turkey has systematically shouldered the responsibility of hosting millions of Syrian refugees over the years. The EU has supported this effort. Since 2011, the EU has provided almost €10 billion to support refugees and the hosting efforts of local communities. Today I am pleased to announce that an additional €1 billion is on the way for 2024, to support health and education for refugees in Turkey and to continue to contribute to migration and border management, including voluntary returns of Syrian refugees’. This was said by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a joint press conference in Ankara, Turkey. ‘As things evolve on the ground we will be able to adapt to the needs that arise in Syria,’ von der Leyen added.
