Brussels, 18 December (LaPresse) – The European Parliament has approved the nomination of Italian candidate Bruna Szego as president of Amla, the EU's anti-money laundering authority. Szego, who currently heads the Anti-Money Laundering Supervision and Regulation Unit at the Bank of Italy, received 569 votes in favour, 20 against and 61 abstentions, in a secret ballot. Based in Frankfurt, the new EU Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Authority (AMLA) has the task of coordinating the actions of national financial intelligence units and directly supervising certain risky financial entities present in several member states. To be appointed president of Amla, Bruna Szego must also receive the support of the EU Council, with a qualified majority decision.
