Milan, Dec. 18 (LaPresse) – California Governor Gavin Newsom declared on Wednesday that the outbreak of avian flu among the state’s dairy cattle has constituted an emergency, marking a clear acknowledgment of the increasing severity of the contagion’s spread. The New York Times reports this.

The announcement followed news that an individual in Louisiana had been hospitalized with avian flu, the first severe case of infection in a human identified so far in the United States.

California was not among the first states to detect the H5N1 avian flu virus in dairy cattle. However, since the first infected herd was identified in late August, the State Department of Agriculture has found the virus in 645 dairy farms, about half of them within the last 30 days.
