Kazakhstan, Authorities: "28 Survivors in Plane Crash"

Moscow (Russia), Dec. 25 (LaPresse/AP) – Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergencies announced that at least 28 people survived the crash of an Azerbaijani Embraer 190 passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines in the Kazakh city of Aktau. Four bodies have been recovered. The ministry confirmed in a statement on Telegram that 67 people, including five crew members, were on board the plane, and 28 of them survived the crash and were hospitalized. Initially, the Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies stated that 25 people survived the crash, later revising the number to 27 and then 28, as search and rescue operations continued at the crash site. The plane was originally scheduled to travel from the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus. According to Azerbaijan Airlines, 37 passengers were Azerbaijani citizens, 16 were Russian, 6 were Kazakh, and 3 were Kyrgyz. A spokesperson for Russia's civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, stated that preliminary information indicated the pilot chose to divert the flight to Aktau after a bird strike caused "an emergency situation on board."
