Kazakhstan: authorities, 38 dead in plane crash

Rome, 25 December (LaPresse) – Thirty-eight people died in the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane in Aktau, Kazakhstan. Kanat Bozumbayev, deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan and head of the commission investigating the causes of the disaster, told Tengrinews. Ria Novosti reports. ‘Twenty-nine people are hospitalised, including two children. Eleven people are in stable and serious condition. The rest are in moderate condition,’ Bozumbaev added. An Embraer 190 aircraft flying from Baku to Grozny crashed near the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan on the morning of 25 December. On board were 62 passengers and five crew members. And the black box of the plane was found. The press service of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, reported that the aircraft changed course due to bad weather and an accident occurred while landing in Aktau. The Head of State emphasised that there are different versions of what happened and called for waiting for the end of the investigation. Among other things, there were reports of a bird strike, whereby the aircraft was allegedly hit by a flock of birds.
