Zelensky: ‘The truce was not a gift, just a postponement of attacks’

Turin, 3 February (LaPresse) – "After the meeting in Abu Dhabi, the US proposed de-escalation measures, including the cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure. It also raised the issue of ceasing attacks on other critical infrastructure. However, we have seen attacks on railways and other facilities. Nevertheless, there have been no attacks on energy infrastructure. The Americans expected this situation to last a week. Today, the Russians hit us with 71 missiles and 450 drones. If you look at the package of attacks that Russia intended to use at the time of the conclusion of the previous negotiations in Abu Dhabi, at that point they had less of everything. What did they do? They postponed the attack, increased the number of missiles and drones, and hit us during the coldest days.‘ Ukrainian President Zelensky wrote this on X. ’So I wouldn't say that anyone gave us a gift. I don't think that's how it went. They struck with a package one and a half times larger than what they could have used then," he explained. ‘It was a very sensible proposal: let's show the whole world and our societies that de-escalation measures are underway. The Americans logically suggested this until the next meeting. And that's how it should have been, so that the next meeting could take place and then the parties could continue to discuss other ways to ease tensions and how we see the end of the war,’ he continued. ‘The meeting was postponed for reasons unrelated to Ukraine, to Wednesday-Thursday. And from our point of view, the easing of tensions should have continued. Yet this was not the case,’ he concluded.
