Prisons, Nordio: "Inmates not only to be helped but also to be rehabilitated"

Rome, Dec. 27 (LaPresse) – Prisoners should "be regarded not only as individuals to be rehabilitated but also to be understood in how they narrate their inner struggles. We must help them overcome the difficult moments of losing their freedom," said Justice Minister Carlo Nordio in an interview with Il Foglio. "From an operational perspective, I emphasize the project of prisons focused on sports and work, as they are essential to relieving tension. Additionally, I aim to promote culture; small theaters, workshops, and orchestras are already active in some facilities. We are now finalizing protocols to bring actors and artists into prisons, many of whom have generously volunteered their time," he said. Nordio, who attended the opening of the Holy Door by Pope Francis at Rebibbia prison yesterday, described the gesture as a "message of hope conceived as an 'anchor'."
